THE ATTERGAU
AND THE FESTIVAL "ATTERSEE KLASSIK"
The region Attergau with the villages St. Georgen, Straß,
Berg and Seewalchen, situated about 50 km from Salzburg with its famous
festival, is the location of the International Orchestra Institute for
the Viennese Style of Making Music in Austria.
The Attergau with the lake Attersee is situated in the northern part of
the Salzkammergut, one of the most fascinating landscapes in Central Europe.
The secludedness of this part of Austria was additionally enhanced by
the Imperial Family - the Emperor of Austria who kept a jealous eye on
the salt mines of that region. Only at the beginning of the 19th century
travellers made their way into the secludedness of this landscape with
the highly original traditions of its inhabitants. Up to this very day
the Salzkammergut is a beloved recreational region of writers, painters
and musicians, as it had already been at the time of the romantic period.
In many museums of the entire world views of this landscape are to be
seen that were painted by famous Austian painters of the "Biedermeier".

Attersee
On the border of the lake Attersee there is the town Seewalchen.
The music school lies on a hill above the town; it was built in the late
period of the "Biedermeier" and was renovated a couple of years
ago, allowing for 12 class-rooms, 2 lecture rooms and a ballet room. There
is a splendid view from the terrace in front of the school over the entire
lake, the mountain chain of the Höllengebirge, the Villa Flöge
and the chateau Schloß Kammer. It is the lake on whose shoreside
Brahms has stayed and Mahler has written his Symphony III.
Gustav Klimt very often spent his summers at Villa Flöge. There he
painted Seewalchen, the lake and Schloß Kammer, where concerts took
place already before the days of the Salzburger Festspiele. Up to today
concerts are being performed at this chateau, built on posts in the lake.
Seewalchen/Attersee
8 km apart there is St. Georgen, an idyllic market-town
is the main town in the Attergau. There is proof of habitation in the
Celtic, Roman and Bajuwarian times. The town is also the birth place of
Johannes Beer, the famous composer and poet of the Baroque period.
All towns of the Attergau mentioned above, are ideal for any kind of sport,
especially water sports and they are perfect as the starting off point
for walks and mountain tours of all difficulties. The distance to Vienna,
the home of the Wiener Klangstil, is 250 km by car or train.
